Buying Your First Violin: Our Expert Advice

07 Aug 2024 0 comments

If you're purchasing a violin for the first time, you might feel overwhelmed and unsure of where to start. This guide aims to address your concerns and help beginner violinists navigate the key issues encountered when buying their first instrument.

1. What Size Violin Should I Choose?

Violins come in several sizes: 4/4 (Full Size), 3/4, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, and 1/32. Choosing the right size might seem daunting, but it’s actually quite straightforward. Here's my advice:

Selecting the correct violin size depends on factors such as height and arm length, though you can initially use age as a rough guide. Ultimately, the user’s arm length is the deciding factor. Generally, adults or senior students will use a 4/4 (Full Size) violin. You can also refer to our size guide for more details.

2. How Much Do I Need to Spend?

Even for beginners, it’s important to avoid extremely cheap instruments. Violins priced at just a few tens of dollars are more like toys and are not suitable for learning. Higher-quality violins require better craftsmanship and materials, so their prices are higher.

A quality beginner’s violin will make playing easier and help build confidence, making it easier to overcome the initial learning curve. Many beginners give up because they started with a poor-quality violin, which is a real shame. At Fiddlover Violin Shop, we offer high-quality beginner violins, such as our Q033 violin, crafted from maple and spruce, with a tailpiece equipped with fine tuners. The Q033 comes with all the necessary accessories, so you can start playing right away. We highly recommend the Q033 as your first violin—it won’t disappoint you.

3. What Accessories Do Beginners Need?

In addition to the violin, you'll need a bow, rosin, shoulder rest, chin rest, mute, fine tuners, tuner, and a cleaning cloth. If you’re unsure about these accessories, feel free to contact us, and we’ll help you use them with ease. If you purchase the Q033 violin package, all these accessories are included.

4. Is Shipping Safe? How Long Does It Take?

Shopping at Fiddlover Violin Shop ensures that your instrument will be delivered safely. You don’t need to worry about any issues during transit, as we offer secure shipping services and take full responsibility for any problems. Our packaging is very sturdy, and we’ve successfully delivered instruments to thousands of customers.

We offer both free and expedited shipping options. Free shipping usually takes 6-10 business days. If you need your violin quickly, you can upgrade to expedited shipping for $15, which typically takes 3-5 business days. Orders usually take 1-4 business days to process before being handed over to our trusted carriers like UPS and FedEx. You can track your order using the provided tracking number.

5. How Should Left-Handed Players Purchase a Violin?

Traditional violins are played with the left hand holding the violin and the right hand using the bow. If you’re left-handed, you can still learn and play with a traditional violin. Most violin teachers have more experience with traditional violins, and these are more commonly available. However, left-handed players might find traditional violins challenging at first.

Left-handed violins differ in structure from traditional violins. If you wish to purchase a left-handed violin, make sure it is clearly labeled as such before buying.
