What should I do if the violin cannot be tuned?

17 Aug 2023 0 comments

For many beginners learning the violin, encountering difficulties in tuning, especially without the guidance of a teacher, is not uncommon. However, there's no need to worry. Reading this article will help you address the issue.

Is it normal for a newly purchased violin to be difficult to tune?

Sometimes, when we receive a new violin, it might be challenging to tune. This is a normal situation, as new violins require more time to break in and perform at their best.

During such times, it's important not to complain, as complaining won't solve any problems. There could be various reasons for the tuning difficulty. Only by identifying the root cause of the problem can we effectively address it.

How to solve problems encountered while tuning the violin?

1. Peg Hole Too Large

If the peg hole is relatively large, you can try applying more force to turn the peg into the hole. Since the peg has a tapered structure, with one end thinner and the other end thicker, the thicker part is more suitable for larger peg holes. If this doesn't work, then you might need to replace the peg. In general, new violins rarely require peg replacement due to this issue.

2. Peg Slipping

If the peg slips, you can apply a specialized peg compound onto the peg and then attempt tuning again. If you don't have peg compound, you can temporarily use rosin powder as a substitute, though it's not recommended to rely on rosin for this purpose continuously.

3. Incorrect Use of Pegs

If you are tuning for the first time and don't have guidance, it's easy to improperly use the pegs for tuning. I've been there too! When I first used pegs to tune, I simply turned the pegs clockwise without simultaneously applying inward pressure on the pegs into the holes. This resulted in not tightening the strings no matter how many turns I made. The problem arises from the lack of pressure applied to push the peg into the peg hole while turning, preventing the strings from getting taut. The solution is simple: while turning the pegs clockwise, simultaneously press the pegs into the peg holes.

4. Not Utilizing Fine Tuners Simultaneously

For beginners, tuning using pegs alone can be quite challenging. Even professional violinists use the E-string fine tuner. As a beginner, it's crucial to use both the fine tuners and the pegs for tuning. If your tailpiece has four fine tuners, even better, as tuning becomes simpler. When tuning, start by tightening the strings using the pegs, and then use the fine tuners to precisely adjust the pitch.

5. Incorrect Placement of the Bridge, Strings, or Soundpost

During tuning, always ensure the proper installation of the bridge, as incorrect placement can affect the sound. Similarly, the strings and soundpost need to be positioned accurately. If the strings are not installed correctly, you can adjust them yourself. If the soundpost isn't properly placed, it's advisable to seek assistance from a professional technician for adjustments. However, incorrect soundpost placement is not a common issue.

6. Improper Use of Tuner

If you're using an electronic tuner, make sure to set it to the "V" mode, as this represents the violin. Other modes correspond to different instruments within the violin family. Tip: You can clip the electronic tuner onto the head of the violin.

7. String Breakage

When tuning a new violin, exerting too much force can lead to string breakage, which is also normal. If you purchased the violin from Fiddlover Violin Shop, there's no need to worry. Spare strings are provided in the violin case, and you can also contact the seller. They will likely offer to send you a separate set of strings based on the situation. Their customer service is truly commendable.

8. Perhaps You Forgot to Rosin the Bow

If you've achieved the right pitch but still aren't getting the correct sound when playing, it's possible that you forgot to rosin the bow. This is quite common for us beginners. I remember receiving my first violin and trying to play without rosin on the bow; the result was quite obviously disappointing.
