Happy Labor Day in 2023!
Time flies, and half a year has passed in a hurry. Labor Day in 2023 is approaching, and I wish everyone a happy Labor Day.
Do you know the origin of Labor Day?
Labor Day in 2023 falls on Monday, September 4th. It is a federal holiday in the United States, commemorating the contributions and achievements of American workers. Traditionally, it is celebrated on the first Monday of September and became a federal holiday in the United States in 1894. Additionally, it marks the end of summer and the beginning of autumn in people's perception.
In history, there was a dark period in American labor history. In the late 1800s, during the peak of the American Industrial Revolution, people worked an average of 12 hours a day, 7 days a week, just to make ends meet. Child labor was prevalent, and young children worked in places like mines and factories, earning much lower wages than adults. The harsh working conditions and unhealthy environments they faced led to difficult lives for many.
As American industry grew, industrialization replaced agriculture, leading to the rise of industrial cities and escalating conflicts. By the late 18th century, the first labor unions emerged and rapidly gained influence. They organized strikes and marches to protest against harsh working conditions and endless exploitation. Violent conflicts, even bloodshed, erupted as a result.
In the wake of this massive unrest and in an attempt to repair ties with American workers, Congress passed an act making Labor Day a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories. On June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed it into law. More than a century later, the true founder of Labor Day has yet to be identified.
How to celebrate Labor Day?
In the United States, Labor Day is still celebrated and commemorated with activities such as parades, picnics, barbecues, and fireworks displays. The Labor Day weekend also provides a three-day holiday, and for children, it marks the beginning of a new school term.
