ABRSM Violin Exams:
Everything U.S. Students Need to Know

Grade levels, exam formats, U.S. dates, fees, and how to register — all in one place.

What Is ABRSM?

ABRSM (The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) was founded in 1889 and is one of the world's most respected music examination boards. Each year, over 600,000 students across more than 90 countries take ABRSM exams — covering violin, piano, and dozens of other instruments.

An ABRSM certificate is internationally recognized and regularly used as evidence of musical achievement for college applications, conservatory auditions, and scholarship programs.

ABRSM Violin Grades Overview

ABRSM violin exams span 10 levels — from complete beginner to near-professional standard. Here's a quick breakdown:

Level Grades What You'll Work On
Beginner Initial – Grade 2 Posture, bow hold, basic technique, and short pieces. Typically the first 1–3 years of learning.
Intermediate Grades 3 – 5 Tone production, intonation, bow control, and stylistic variety across different repertoire.
Advanced Grades 6 – 8 High-level technique and expressive performance. Music Theory Grade 5 required before entry.

Exam Types & Structure

ABRSM offers two exam formats. Choose the one that fits your goals and schedule:

Practical Grade — In Person
  • 3 pieces from the ABRSM syllabus
  • Scales and arpeggios
  • Sight-reading
  • Aural tests
Performance Grade — Digital
  • 4 pieces — video submission only
  • No scales, sight-reading, or aural tests
  • Open year-round
  • Upload within 28 days of registration

Which format is right for you?

Choose the Practical Grade if you want a comprehensive assessment that covers scales, sight-reading, and aural skills alongside your pieces.

Choose the Performance Grade if you'd rather focus entirely on repertoire, or if you need the flexibility of a year-round schedule without fixed exam windows.

Choosing the Right Violin for Your Grade

Your instrument directly affects your tone quality and playability — both of which matter in an exam setting. Here's what to look for at each stage:

Level Grades What to Look For
Beginner Initial – Grade 2 Lightweight, easy to tune, and durable. A stable setup helps build correct technique from day one.
Intermediate Grades 3 – 5 Balanced tone and good responsiveness across the bow. Supports varied dynamics and articulation.
Advanced Grades 6 – 8 Strong projection, expressive tonal range, and a refined setup. Built to handle demanding repertoire.
